I first started learning French in high school and I kept up with my learning because I felt it was important for me to know the other official language of my country. I quickly realized that, while that is important, learning French also benefits me by opening many opportunities. For one, learning another language has made me understand my first language on a deeper level. As well, it has helped me in learning other new languages. I was inspired to learn German to connect with my German heritage (on my maternal side) and also learn the language of some friends I had made while abroad. Learning another language helps one not only to communicate and make connections with people around the world, but it also gives a glimpse into how they may view things.
